When I first moved to NYC I didn't understand why everyone was dying to get out of town during the summer. It's the greatest city in the world, right?! Well, after enduring my first summer in the concrete jungle a few years ago, I understood why getting away isn't a want, it's a necessity! Holy cow does this city get hot. By mid-July it's downright unbearable. The subways are 110 degrees, everything smells, and due to all the tall buildings there is rarely a nice breeze. Today it was 92! Welcome to summer in NYC my friends. I'm really selling it, huh? HA.
So after that first summer I made a point to travel during those super hot months. Maine, Cape Cod, and Vermont were my go-tos, but they are each a good 5 hour drive away. Many New Yorkers head to the Hamptons, which is only about 2 hours east of the city. Being from the Midwest, I didn't know much about the Hamptons outside of what you read in gossip magazines. Didn't Diddy used to throw a white party at his Hamptons house?? That was the extent of my knowledge. So when my friend Allie invited me to her house in East Hampton for the weekend, I jumped at the opportunity to check it out (and escape the heat)!
While there is definitely an abundance of wealth (in the form of fabulous homes, vintage cars, and lust-worthy shopping), there is something in the Hamptons for everyone! We spent the day Saturday at a garden tour, which featured several extravagant gardens and even more extravagant homes (full blog post on that coming soon!). And Sunday was spent eating our way through Montauk. We started the day with brunch at The Surf Lodge, followed by drinks at Gurney's. I tried the famous lobster roll at The Lobster Roll (known as Lunch because of the sign outside), and OMG it was amazing! I honestly think it might be top 5 best things I've ever eaten. After Lunch, we headed home and found the cutest little local fruit stand on the side of the road and had to pull over for strawberries!! We topped off our day with ice cream in East Hampton. Whew!
And if that hasn't sold you on booking your next trip, the weather was 72 and sunny. It doesn't get any better than that! I'm already counting down the days until our next trip later this month :)
While Nantucket may still be my ultimate summer happy place, the Hamptons has certainly landed a spot on my short list. What's your favorite summer vacation spot?? I would love to hear about it!
